Help with this algebra question. It seems simple but you need a shortcut way to do it. It's supposed to be factoring but I can't figure that part out. Please don't just put it into a calculator.

The serenity and the mystic are sail boats. the serenity and the mystic start at the same point and travel away from each other in opposite directions. the serenity travels at 16 mph and the mystic travels at 19 mph. how far apart will they be in 3 hours?

Me with this assignment ! i only partially understand, so explain. also it's a work sample. at the championship bike race, steve and paula were fighting for first place. steve was 175 feet ahead of paula and had only 300 feet left to go. he was very tired and was going only 9 feet per second. paula was desperate to catch up and was going 15 feet per second. who won the bike race and by how far did she/he win?
