Experiment 1: Dropping an Object
Find a certain height (the higher is better) from which you can drop something like a stone (or a small but dense object) safely, measure and record that height and measure the time it takes for the object to fall that distance 10 times.
Calculate the average and the estimated standard error of the means for your data since you have only one set of data.
Repeat the experiment to add an additional 20 data points to your pre-existing data for a total of 30 data points. Since this is the same exact experiment, you still have only one set of data.
Calculate the average and the estimated standard error of the means for your entire data set.
Repeat the experiment until you have a total of 100 data points. Keep the order at which the data was taken.
Calculate the average and the estimated standard error of the means for your entire data set.
[The experiment is given to you as a movie file. Use it to measure the fall times for yourself.] Put your data in a histogram
Start with a time bin size of 0.02 second. Generate 5 bins (or enough to include all of your data) on either side of the bin containing the average. Here is my example. Note that I sorted the data above first. It is easier to fill in the bins this way. The count is the number of data points in that fall
within the bin range.
Make a histogram of your data set after the first 10 data points, after the first 30 data points, and after all 100 data point. Results and Conclusion
Report the average and the estimates standard error of your entire data set of 100 data points.
Answer the following questions.
1. Does any of the 3 histograms have any bell curve characteristic of any kind? If so, which one(s) has it?
