What is the astronaut impact on the future of the united states?

In the late 60s and early 70s when the United States was developing the space program, the was a great sense of national pride to get to space. The space program also provided many inventions that we use today. If we were to renew the space program, say to Mars, it would be something for the country to rally around and provide more research and development.
