The Morrill Act

Explanation: The Morrill Act was signed into law by the President of the United States; Abraham Lincoln in July 2nd, 1862. The Act was named after Vermont Congressman Justin Morrill.

This enactment gave rise to many institutions of higher education (colleges and universities) with grants of federal land (about thirty thousand acres of land to each state).

The allocated federal land was sold by the states and sixty-nine colleges were funded, including University of Nebraska, South Dakota State University, Kansas State University. Cornell University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the University of Wisconsin at Madison.
