Here’s the passage: Rivers of Sub-Saharan Africa

Some rivers of the world are often called inland waterways. This is because they are navigable. They allow people and boats to travel by water, even though they are inland. Inland waterways, like other bodies of water such as oceans and lakes, also provide food and other resources. In Africa, though, most of the rivers are not navigable. In other words, ships and boats cannot travel on them. This is because most of Africa’s rivers are interrupted by great waterfalls. These waterfalls make it impossible to travel on the rivers. However, a few important rivers are at least partly navigable.

The longest river in sub-Saharan Africa is the Congo River. It flows 2,700 miles, mostly through Democratic Republic of the Congo and Republic of the Congo. The Congo River is Africa’s most important transportation system and flows through the second-largest rainforest in the world, the Congo Rainforest. River people, such as the Wagenia, have built villages along the river and use the inland waterway for fishing. The Congo River is also used to transport natural resources, such as minerals and wood, by boat and for freshwater.

The Niger River is the second longest river in sub-Saharan Africa. The Niger River flows northeast through Mali, then curves around and flows southeast into Niger and Nigeria, emptying into the Gulf of Guinea. Most of the 2,590-mile-long Niger River is also navigable. For those living along the Niger River, the inland waterway provides a water source for irrigation, transportation, and to produce hydroelectricity.

The Zambezi River is the third longest river system in sub-Saharan Africa. Most of the Zambezi is navigable by shallow-draft steamers (boats that do not need very deep waters). The river flows through 6 countries in sub-Saharan Africa and provides a source of food and freshwater and helps create rich soil that is good for agricultural activities.
