Gases is the correct answer. The speed of sound is the distance that sound waves travel in a given amount of time. Sound waves are mechanical waves, and they can only travel through matter. This matter is called the medium (plural, media).  Generally, sound waves travel most quickly through solids, followed by liquids, and then by gases. Particles of matter are closest collected in solids and farthest apart in gases. If particles are closer together, they can pass the energy faster of vibrations to near particles. Sound travels slowest through air as the atoms in the atmosphere are less packed together.
