The Hawthorne studies were conducted in the 1920s and were the first studies to examine psychological components of job design. These studies were meant to explore the impact of lighting levels on productivity but found that more dynamic social systems among the employees had a greater impact. More current studies have determined that characteristics such as skill variety, job identity, job significance, autonomy, and feedback are important to workers. These characteristics are typical of which of the components of job design
