Hypothesis:

What do you predict you will find about the number of cells in each of the phases of the cell cycle during this virtual lab?

I hypothesize that in all of the stages the numbers will be relatively low, under five for each of them except the Interphase. Since interphase takes the longest out of all stages in the cell cycle, I hypothesis that this stage will take the longest when percentages are compared.

Interphase The chromatin appears as a tangled mess, there is a single cell pictured.

Prophase       The chromatin condenses, becoming visible as chromosomes.  Spindle fibers have formed. Only one cell in this image.

Metaphase Spindle fibers have now aligned the chromosomes into a row in the middle of the nucleus. Only one cell.

Anaphase The chromosomes pair up, and begin moving to their respective sides of the cell to prepare for separation, only one cell.

TelophaseNew membranes form around the newly divided and paired chromosomes, two cells are beginning to form

Cytokinesis There is now two ‘divided’ daughter cells. A plate forms between them to keep them from splitting apart by ‘pinching’ in order to maintain structure in the plant.

Conclusion:  

Based on your data, what can you infer about the length of time spent in each stage of the cell cycle?

Based upon the data I have collected during this virtual lab, I can infer that the length of time used in the ‘Interphase’ step uses the most time. Additionally, I can say that each of the other phases, aside from the ‘Prophase’ step, take a small and almost equal amount of time.

What stages were the longest and shortest? Give a brief explanation of why these stages may have that time period.  

The most time is spent in the Interphase step, and this is because the cell takes this time to prepare for the action of cell division, and it takes time for the necessary protein used in the duplication of organelles to be collected. The stage called ‘Cytokinesis’ is the shortest phase in the cell cycle, only taking up 3% of the total time spent in this process. Cytokinesis is the final step in this process, and it is the action of division of the newly formed daughter cells after all other steps in the cell cycle occur.

What is a distinguishing visible feature of each stage of the cell cycle?

Each phase has a different chromosomes arrangement. Each phase has its chromosomes arranged in a Found in each phase pictured in the Virtual Lab slideshow, each image, or phase displays a different arrangement of chromosomes. Each of the phases in the cell cycle require a specific arrangement of chromosomes in order to function, providing a unique look for each phase (when pictured).

What differences can you see when you compare the nucleus of a dividing cell with the nucleus of a non-dividing cell?

The difference you can see when comparing the two, a dividing and a non-dividing cell, is found when looking at the chromosomes. Within a dividing cell, the chromosomes are visible and can be seen easily, and in a non-dividing cell, these chromosomes are not visible.
