For what purpose did the great wagon road develop?

The Great Wagon Road was the only colonial road in America that connected Pennsylvania with North Carolina and beyond with Georgia. It was used en masse by settlers heading south with the intention of settling the interior of the country. They were mainly German and Scottish-Irish emigrants, who occupied these territories in the 18th century. Scots, Irish and English from the north were the largest group of immigrants from the British Isles before the American Revolution.
