Robert purchased a rectangular plot of land. The length of the plot is 20 feet more than the width.
The cost of the land was $12 per square foot. Robert also had a fence put around the entire
perimeter of the plot, at a cost of $8 per lincar foot. The total amount he spent on both the
land and the fence was $10,560.
Information we know from the problem
Formulas that we will need
Part A
Write an equation in two variables for the perimeter, P, and an equation in two variables for the
area, A, of the plot of land where x is the width of the plot in feet. Provide evidence to support
your equations
Part B
Write an equation in one variable that can be used to find the width x feet of the plot. Express
the equation in the form ax + bx + c = 0. Provide evidence to support your answer.
Part C
What are the dimensions, in feet, of the plot? Provide evidence, including an explanation of each
step in the solution to the quadratic equation, to support your answer.
